Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur, also known as the “City of Devotees,” is home to medieval art and architecture. Located about 14 kilometers (9 miles) east of Kathmandu, the city was founded in the 9th century and is shaped like a conch shell. It sits at an elevation of approximately 4,600 feet above sea level.

In Bhaktapur (also known as Bhadgaon), you will visit Bhaktapur Durbar Square and the famous Palace of 55 Windows, built by King Bhupatindra Malla. You will also see the iconic five-storied Nyatapola Temple, which stands on a terraced plinth featuring pairs of figures—two goddesses, two strong men, two elephants, two lions, and two griffins.

The Nyatapola Temple is the tallest temple in the valley and is one of the finest examples of pagoda-style architecture, built during the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla.

Pashupatinath Temple:

Pashupatinath Temple stands in the center of Deopatan town, within a spacious open courtyard. This square, two-tiered pagoda-style temple is built on a single-tier plinth and rises 23.6 meters above the ground. The temple features richly ornamented gilt and silver-plated doors on all four sides.

On either side of each door are niches of various sizes containing gold-painted images of guardian deities. Inside the temple is a narrow ambulatory surrounding the sanctum. The sanctum houses a one-meter-high Shiva linga with four faces (Chaturmukha), representing Lord Pashupati, along with images of Vishnu, Surya, Devi, and Ganesh.

The priests of Pashupatinath are known as Bhattas, while the chief priest is called the Mool Bhatta or Raval. Traditionally, the chief priest was answerable only to the King of Nepal and periodically reported temple matters to him.

The wooden struts beneath the roofs, dating back to the late 17th century, are beautifully decorated with carvings depicting members of Shiva’s family, including Parvati, Ganesh, Kumar, and the Yoginis, as well as Hanuman, Rama, Sita, Lakshman, and other deities from the Ramayana.

The extensive temple complex also includes many ancient and significant temples, shrines, and statues. South of the main temple lies Chadeshvar, an inscribed Licchavi-era linga dating from the 7th century, while to the north stands a 9th-century temple dedicated to Brahma. On the southern side of the temple is the Dharmashila, a sacred stone used for taking solemn oaths, along with pillars featuring statues of various Shah kings.

Flowing beside the temple is the sacred Bagmati River, whose banks are lined with numerous ghats used by pilgrims for ritual bathing and religious ceremonies. Renovating and maintaining these ghats has long been considered a meritorious act.

Boudhanath Stupa

Boudhanath is one of the world’s largest stupas and a site of great reverence for Buddhists. It is also considered the center of Tibetan culture in Nepal. Standing 36 meters high, the magnificent stupa is one of the largest in South Asia.

The stupa was renovated by the Licchavi rulers during the 8th century. The mandala design of Boudhanath is said to be modeled after the one in Gyantse, Tibet.

Boudhanath is located along the ancient trade route to Tibet, where Tibetan merchants rested and offered prayers for centuries. When Tibetan refugees entered Nepal during the 1950s, many chose to settle around Boudhanath, leading to the development of a vibrant Tibetan community in the area.

The stupa is believed to enshrine the remains of the sage Kashyapa, who is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. Smaller stupas are situated around the base, while numerous gompas (monasteries), curio shops, and restaurants surround the complex, creating a lively spiritual and cultural atmosphere.

After hotel check-in, the remainder of the day is free for relaxation after tour or independent exploration in the near market.

**Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.**

Day 03

KATHMANDU SIGHTSEEING

After breakfast at the hotel, proceed for a sightseeing tour of Patan City , Sowaybhunath & Chandragiri temple with Cable car.

Patan Durbar Square

Located about 5 km south of Kathmandu, Patan is one of the three royal cities in the valley. A destination for connoisseurs of fine arts, Patan is filled with intricate wood and stone carvings, metal statues, and ornate architecture, including dozens of Buddhist and Hindu temples and over 1,200 monuments.

Patan is believed to have been founded in the 3rd century B.C. by the Kirat dynasty and was later expanded and enriched by the Licchavi and Malla rulers during the medieval period. Patan Durbar Square, like its counterpart in Kathmandu, is an enchanting blend of palace buildings, artistic courtyards, and graceful pagoda-style temples. The former royal palace complex is the center of Patan’s religious and social life and also houses a beautiful museum.

One remarkable monument here is a 16th-century temple dedicated to the Hindu god Krishna, built entirely of stone.

Swayambhunath Stupa

Swayambhunath Stupa, believed to be around 2,000 years old, is a sacred Buddhist stupa situated atop a hill. The main stupa consists of a solid hemisphere of brick and earth, supporting a lofty conical spire crowned with a gilded copper pinnacle.

Painted on all four sides of the base of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha, symbolizing wisdom and compassion. The hill of Swayambhunath is also adorned with a mosaic of small chaityas and pagoda-style temples.

From the stupa, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Kathmandu.

Chandragiri: The temple at Chandragiri is called Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple, a Famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It sits on the top of Chandragiri Hill which we reach by cable car from down town at an elevation of about 2551 meters and is one of the major religious and tourist attractions near Kathmandu.
